Tyler SmithFounder and Managing Attorney

Tyler is a 1999 graduate of the University of Oregon and earned his Juris Doctorate from Willamette University College of Law in Salem, Oregon.

Tyler started Tyler Smith & Associates Rural Business Attorneys in 2007. In his prior career building Silcon Valley business start-up teams, Tyler established himself as one of the most successful and respected headhunters. Tyler has a strong background in business, sales, and company start up. Prior to starting his law firm, Tyler last worked for Microsoft. Tyler is a past Vice-Chairman of the Oregon Republican Party, and has been in leadership positions on various boards, committees and political causes. He is also a past Chairman of the Hubbard and Canby Planning Commissions and was also a past City Counselor at both cities. Tyler has been active in Oregon law and politics for over 20 years working to make productive changes for our state.

Tyler has extensive experience in major high profile legal disputes and he is one of few attorneys in Oregon that has extensive experience working with government agencies both in the legal realm and in the making of public policy.  He has been at the forefront of many significant changes to Oregon law, via the Supreme Court, Court of Appeals and through legislation.  Some of that experience includes land use reforms adopted by the Legislature giving some local control back to regions by making the land use process simpler and more meaningful; drafting and defending Second Amendment Sanctuary Ordinances; protecting religious liberty and free speech in noteworthy cases like Sweetcakes by Melissa; Defeating improper attempts to force City’s to do the state’s bidding in cases like DeYoung and Damascus v. State of Oregon; Challenging vaccine and mask mandates (and being ruled correct); and more which is why many elected public officials rely on Tyler for guidance or else know they should take heed. Tyler is continually fighting to protect business owners from abusive government processes and agencies. Tyler is a former Army Combat Engineer and attended the Oregon Military Academy. He is a proud veteran and frequently represents veterans.  Tyler is often asked to give speeches, comments, or represent parties in high profile and controversial issues, including organization and planning strategy for large public policy campaigns as he has been asked to be on the Top 50 lawyers in America list.  With both an academic and a real world perspective, Tyler can see all perspectives to help his clients formulate a winning strategy.

You can see more about Tyler’s professional and educational background on the following link to his LinkedIn profile. Tyler is one of few Oregon attorneys with substantive election law experience, and one of the few who frequently battles governments at all levels to keep them accountable to the people. Tyler is an active member of city leadership, in his community, church and local political organizations. He and his wife have one son and daughter and they love to be in the water or on the basketball court.
